The Long-Term User –
high quality, no odor, and easy to work with excellent sound absorbing material
I rarely leave reviews. But after buying mass-loaded sheets from two other vendors on Amazon that were cheaply made and off-gassed horribly (even after 2 weeks) – I had to remove them after installation, so I wasted my money because I couldn’t return the material – I thought I would leave a review here so others do not make the same mistake I did.This is high-quality mass-loaded vinyl material. It absorbs sound effectively, is easy to cut, and, just as important, is often overlooked: it has no off-gassing and no smell. It is remarkable. And it works better than equivalent products for sound absorption. I repeat, it has no smell or off-gassing. It does not smell or contaminate your house like some other mass-loaded vinyl sheets on Amazon.If you are looking for high-quality material to add to your sound absorption, look no further. Works flawlessly, but make sure what your particular noise control situation requires…
4 stars instead of 5 because I wish it were cheaper! First, the odor – the roll I received had little or no headache-inducing vinyl odor. Double thumbs up. Second, the application. My particular situation – I have a drum kit set up in my basement. The concrete foundation is good at blocking noise, but the windows at the top of the foundation, not so much. I don’t want to bother the next door neighbors with loud drumming. The solution to this particular problem is to get 3″ mineral wool, cut to fit the window opening, then cut a same-size piece of the MLV material and put on top of the mineral wool. The stackup of materials, from the outside in, is glass + mineral wool + MLV. This doesn’t block 100% of the sound, but it does a really good job. In this case the MLV is one part of the solution. I put the mineral wool/MLV combo in a heavy duty plastic garbage bag to prevent dust coming off of the mineral wool into the basement space. There is nothing magical about the MLV – it is just a mass layer. Other materials of similar density and rigidity (rubber mat for example) would also work. The MLV advantage is it is very flexible and cuts easily with a razor knife. And you can fasten it or glue it fairly easily to another surface.If you are trying to block sound from an adjoining room or apartment, however, this can get really tricky because the sound can travel through many paths. Even if you completely cover one wall with a sheet of MLV (or an insulation layer such as the mineral wool plus the MLV), this may not effectively block the sound if the sound is also traveling through another path to get into the space you are trying to make quiet. Sort of like the water dripping through your ceiling, sound will go wherever physics permits it to go. There is some reasonably good practical information at this website: soundproofcow.com. This is a commercial website, and I am not endorsing their products, but you can find some good info on approaches to noise control here.If you want to study the physics of it all, get the book “Noise and Vibration Control”, edited by Leo Beranek.

It’s heavy!
It’s heavy. I mean two people need to carry it upstairs heavy. But it works fine. I’m a voice over artist and needed it for my studio. Works well.

Effective but Heavy
I recently use 1 pound mass loaded vinyl for soundproofing my living room and it is fantastic. It’s significantly cut down noise and it was easy to cut and fit, but we had a hard time putting it up because of the weight. We installed it along with wood panels since my TV wall in the living room is against my bedroom wall, and it made a huge difference in reducing the noise. The quality is excellent, and it feels durable and long lasting. While it might be a bit pricey, the noise reduction benefits, made it worth it. I highly recommended for anyone needing to reduce the noise

sound blocking
The product came quickly and is as advertised as far as size and quality, but was a little disappointed as far as sound blocking. I used it around a vinyl fence enclosure around a standby generator and only helped a little. I have to add another barrier like a sound blanket.

Silence! Necessary Building Material for a Quiet Home Office or Other Room in need of Soundproofing
What is Mass Load Vinyl?! I had never heard of it before. But after sharing a home office wall with my wife, and our mics picking up eachothers voice between the walls – I knew we needed to do something. I researched soundproofing solutions and came across a great article on this product.I recently built two new rooms in my house to be used for Home Offices. Soundproofing was a must. My Walls: Offset 2x4s between rooms, filled with rockwool insulation, plastic visqueen, Mass Load Vinyl on one side of that wall, then 5/8in sheetrock on both sides. The Result: I can’t hear ANYTHING! I also put rockwool insulation in the floor and a floor version of this product on top of the subfloor before putting down the wood flooring.This is WORTH the cost. I highly recommend. the contractors and drywallers I talked to had never heard of this. Do your research and include this material in your rooms where soundproofing is necessary – you won’t regret it. TV on the downstairs home theatre? I wouldn’t know. son playing drums in his bedroom? again, if I didn’t come out of my office, I’d have no idea. anyone overhearing my phone calls? not happening.Do it right and hang this product between the wall studs and the sheetrock. I highly recommend.

I did the sound deadening for my car in stages. This MLV was the final one going on top of the CLD tiles and foam. I only used this MLV on the floor of the car and as high up onto the firewall as I could reach. I was not able to dismantle the dashboard. Now my car is vastly quieter. I did the sound deadening for my sanity from road noise and also to enhance my audio system which has been upgraded for sound quality running nearly 1000 watts RMS.

Heavy material, dull hey black, but it’s designed to be buried in a wall or covered up, as it has a noticeable smell of fire retardant chemicals which I am very sensitive to. So was unable to use for intended door soundproofing.
